PORSCHE again looks to have the GT class to its self in 2001 except for a lone Callaway C12. Although the quasi-factory Alex Job team will not be present, ten of the 911GT3R or RS models have been given entries with another three listed as reserves. Leading off the list will be #71 Racing Engineering GT3R. Next up comes last years GT winner Team Taisan/Advan of Japan with #72 GT3RS which receives and automatic bid. The team has also received a reserve entry for its #73 GTR. This team is very experienced in long distance racing and if some of true top Porsche privateers have problems watch out. Next up is the #74 Luc Alphand Adventures GT3R. This team will receive a boost from JB Motorsports (Ferrari Fame) for the race. Perspective Racing returns to Le Mans with its new #75 911GT3RS this year. This team has frequently received an entry for the event no doubt because of its French connections and has been running well in the N-GT of the FIA-GT Championship. PK Sport/ Ricardo will run the #75 GT3RS. PK Sport has grown in the past two years from a team running British National events to a full blown Private Porsche Team. The team will run two cars in the ELMS and could surprise during the 24 hours. Freisinger Motorsports has received an entry for its #77 GT3RS and a reserve for its #78 GT3RS. The powerhouse German team was surprised that it did not receive a second guarantee but with a strong driver lineup and a 3rd overall in the Rolex 24 Freisinger has to be listed as one of the favorites. Noel Del Bello is next up with #79 911GT3R. This team is not expected to contend for the win but could finish well being the team are in a Porsche. The true pre-race favorite for the GT class will of course go to the #80 Larbre Competition 911GT3Rs. The reigning N-GT class champion in the FIA-GT sat on the pole at Le Mans last year and was the only team that had the pace of the factory backed Barbour cars. The team has also received a reserve entry for its #81 911GT3R. Seikel Motorsport are the only team to receive two entries in the GT class. The Canadian based team who finished third in GT in 2000 were probably awarded for its support of GT racing all over the globe. The #82 and #83 911GT3RS's will I'm sure wear their attractive livery nicely and with the extra resources of having two cars in the race could help lead this team to the top of the podium come Sunday afternoon. |

CALLAWAY comes back to Le Mans in 2001 with the latest version of its Racing C12. The MCR/Aspen Knolls team #70 ran Le Mans last year with Porsche but were eliminated in a frightning accident. The C12 has only two races under its belt, both of which were run without any testing on the car. Plenty of testing time will surely take place leading up to the trials May 6th. The beautiful car is a welcome site in the GT class for 2001 and the V8 power could just surprise some come qualifying. |
